Cold Room Troubleshooting Checklist

When a cold room stops working properly, it can lead to thousands of rands in lost stock. Whether you’re cooling fruit, meat, or dairy, quick diagnostics are key. Here’s a step-by-step cold room troubleshooting checklist to help you identify and fix issues before they become costly breakdowns.

1. Check the Power Supply

Ensure that the cold room has a stable power source. Check if:

  • Main DB board breakers are on
  • Backup systems (like inverters or generators) are functioning
  • Voltage readings are within operating range

2. Confirm the Thermostat Settings

Incorrect thermostat settings or sensor failure can cause cooling to stop. Make sure the temperature set point is correct for your product type. If the display is blank or flashing, you may have a controller issue or power loss to the thermostat.

3. Listen for Compressor and Fans

No sound? That’s a clue. A silent compressor or non-operating fans could mean:

  • Compressor overload or thermal cutout tripped
  • Fan motor failure
  • Contactor, relay or capacitor issue

4. Inspect the Evaporator and Condenser Coils

Look for:

  • Ice build-up on the evaporator coil → defrost heater may have failed
  • Dirt or dust on condenser coil → poor airflow = poor cooling
  • Blocked filters or restricted fans

5. Check Door Seals and Room Insulation

Even a small leak can cause temperature rise. Check:

  • Door gasket is sealing all around
  • No gaps, cracks or insulation damage
  • Automatic door closers are working

6. Monitor for Refrigerant Leaks

Signs of low gas:

  • Compressor runs constantly but temperature doesn’t drop
  • Ice only at compressor suction line
  • Oil stains near copper joints or TX valves

7. Use a Thermal Imaging Scan

Thermal scans reveal hidden hot spots, airflow issues, and failing components before they cause a full system failure. We use this technology during our inspections across the Western Cape to detect electrical hotspots or blocked airflow zones.

When to Call a Technician

If you’ve checked all the above and your cold room still isn’t performing, it’s time to call in a technician. At FarmTech Engineer, we offer rapid-response diagnostics and repairs for agricultural cold rooms across Heidelberg, Riversdale, and surrounding areas.
